What is BPSS Clearance?

BPSS clearance stands for Baseline Personnel Security Standard clearance and is a government-recognised pre-employment screening process designed to ensure individuals are trustworthy, reliable, and suitable for roles involving access to sensitive information, sites, or systems.

It is not a formal ‘security clearance’ like the five levels of National Security Clearance, but it is the first requirement for working in sectors such as defence, aerospace, government, and critical national infrastructure. The BPSS checks are based on government criteria and provide a consistent and reliable approach to workforce vetting.

How long does BPSS clearance take?

You could get BPSS clearance in as little as to 2-3 days

Obtaining BPSS clearance through National Screening Agency can be a reasonably speedy process which we can often complete in as little as 2 – 3 days, if the applicant and third parties  respond quickly with the information we need.

More typically however, you’d expect 5-15 days as the clearance can be held up, for example, during the process of verifying employment history due to slow response of third parties.

What checks are made for BPSS clearance?

The BPSS clearance process includes the following key checks:

  • Right to Work – Verification of nationality, immigration status, and eligibility to work in the UK.
  • Identity Check – Confirmation of a person’s identity using official documents.
  • Address Verification – Covering the last 3 years
  • Criminal Record Check (unspent only) – Basic Disclosure (DBS check) to identify any unspent convictions.
  • Employment History (3 years) – Confirmation of employment or activity for the past three years, including any gaps.
